Choosing a prom dress to wear to your ball is a fun yet time consuming and complicated job. Long or short, straps or strapless, chiffon or satin, sometimes there is too much choice. The most important thing is that you find a dress that you feel good in which is often not similar to your best friends or the one you Mum likes the best (sorry Mum). Some girls prefer to go in a shop and try on dresses but other prefer to order online and try on at home sending the dress/dresses back for a refund if not right. Buying dresses online is a great option but I recommend that you just make sure that you have checked or considered the below points to save being disappointed:
1. Check that the online store is a genuine retailer. A lot of online stores use the images of a designer dress but make up a much lower quality version to post out to you. A quick online search with the company name followed by “review” should give a good idea of other customers dealings with the store. You can also check out the designer website where they will normally have a list of genuine retailers of there dresses.
2. Is the store in the UK? Some stores give the impression that they are in the UK but have no UK telephone number to verify. You can order dresses from abroad but make sure that you check the “returns policy” as often the dress can’t be returned if it is not right. Please also remember that dresses coming from outside of Europe will be subject to 20% VAT charge and import duty of around 12% which you will be liable to pay to customs before they release the dress to you.
3. Is the dress in stock? Some online dress shops do not actually stock many dresses but try to order the dress in from the manufacturer after you have paid for it. This can be fine but be aware that if they find out they can’t get the dress at a later date you have wasted a lot of time.
4. Can you speak to someone on the phone? Most reputable online stores will give you the option to call them on a UK land line if you wish. A lot of customers will just order online with no need to speak to anybody but I think the option to speak to real person should be there.
